Michael Grzimek School

Frankfurt am Main (D)

The new school building uses the grid of an existing building and multiplies it into an open type of school - a "school without walls". In the west the elongated two-storey structure closes the property. The new heart of the system is the connecting wing, which contains the new main entrance, the media library and the cafeteria. The cafeteria opens onto a spacious south-facing terrace including the school garden. Two planted courtyards allow two-sided exposures and extensions of all classrooms into the exterior. Spacious terraces, a spacious beige square and a so-called green classroom complete the offer of children's open spaces. The entire exterior wall elements were prefabricated as highly thermally insulated wooden elements and are covered with an encircling standing larch wood screen.
