As part of the competition, a new residential quarter is to be built on a plot of around 10,016 m² to the west of Mindelheim town center. The aim is to create attractive living space for young families, older people and couples. The town of Mindelheim is pursuing sustainable residential development that goes beyond organic growth and strengthens the town center. The plan is to build 10-15 systematized terraced houses in timber construction as well as multi-storey residential buildings with a high degree of prefabrication and standardized elements. The aim is to examine a contemporary urban transformation that blends into the overall development in terms of scale, storeys and building typology.
The design concept responds to the striking topography, which rises to the west, as well as to the heterogeneous building structure of the surrounding area. The buildings are arranged in such a way that they create a staggered height from the small-scale development on Unterer Mayenbadweg to a six-storey high point that blends into the topography. At the same time, well thought-out open spaces, distances and visual relationships are maintained. Along Memminger Strasse, a spacious arrival area with green space is being created, which leads into the district via a central access axis. The buildings are grouped around a central square with communal uses, while a social housing building with pergola access and three groups of terraced houses with private gardens are located to the north.
